Roulette odds and tips
Roulette odds and tips Whenever you search for roulette on the internet, you’ll encounter an almost limitless number of fail-proof systems people claim can beat the little wheel over the long-run. While there are indeed a few ways in which you can improve the odds the wheel grants you, the very first thing you need to understand in this respect is that you need to be realistic about your whole approach. The reality is that playing roulette is a negative EV undertaking, whatever you do. No system ever beats the mathematical odds which are “programmed” into the wheel through the addition of the “0” and the “00”.
Another thing that you need to be aware of when it comes to the wheel is that you won’t just face the house edge (which is around 5% on most bets) but rather the house drop, which can be as much as 30%. Understanding the house drop is a tad more difficult than getting to grips with the house edge.
The essence of the problem is though, that by repeatedly going up against a set house edge on a set bankroll, a player will be hit by a bigger and bigger house edge, due to the losses incurred on money re-introduced into the betting circuit.
A plain example in this respect would be the following: if you have a set $50 bankroll, and you play it through once, twice, three times, an endless number of times, sooner or later you’ll lose it all to the 5% house edge. In this case, even though the house edge is 5%, the house drop will be 100%.
Being in the know about these things is the first step you need to take towards devising a viable roulette strategy. Studying the odds involved in the different types of bets offered is the second step.
The American Roulette has two green slots on the wheel, a “0” and a “00”. This fact alone produces an increase in the house edge, which is pretty significant.
A European roulette has a single green slot (the “0”) and has therefore a much smaller house edge. The house edge on the European roulette (on a single number bet) is 2.7%, while it is a rather commanding 5.26% on an American roulette wheel. First roulette strategy step? Pick European over American.
Whichever type of roulette you play, make sure you avoid the 5-number bet. While pretty much all the other roulette bets carry a negative expected value of $0.053/ $1 bet, the 5-number bet has a negative EV of $0.079, which means you’ll lose your money faster, which means that you will get fewer chances to take advantage of the variance and get lucky.
Even though pretty much all roulette bets carry the $0.053 EV- mentioned above, that doesn’t mean they pay out the same way. Payouts and odds are carefully balanced in roulette so that they always hit players with the same EV-.
If you place your money on bets with better odds, you’ll get a smaller payout rate, if you place your money on weaker odds, you’ll get more on a single win.
Remember, roulette is a game based on pure chance. The fact that there is a house edge on it doesn’t mean you can’t walk away rich from the table. It only means that you will have to pay a tax on each of the chances the casino grants you for walking away rich.
The variance is what you have to keep an eye on as it’s the only thing that makes it possible for you to strike it rich. One more piece of advice: if you do strike it, leave while you’re ahead. That way, you’ll prevent the variance from swinging back at you and taking its gift back.
Do sign up for all sorts of comp point and rakeback-like deals.
They’ll shave a little bit more off the house edge.
Forget about how different roulette spins influence any of the upcoming results. In roulette, every single spin is 100% independent from all other spins that happened before. If you see a roulette system based on the denial of this fact, that’s your clue that it’s bogus.
Don’t count on physical defects of the wheel either. The casino keeps a much closer eye on the results its wheels yield than you ever could, and if there is something wrong indeed, they’ll be the first to know.
